Balboa M7 surface-mount temperature sensor
This Balboa temperature sensor has a self-adhesive pad, and can be stuck on the outside of a metal heater tube. It is known as the M7 SMT sensor (we're pretty sure that SMT stands for Surface Mount Thermistor), and it is installed in Cal Spa XL control systems, among others.
This sensor can be a solution for spa retrofits using LX Whirlpool heaters (e.g. type -R1 or -R2), where you can replace the control system with a Balboa version with no heater (GS100 or BP200UX).
Be careful during installation to make sure that there is very good contact between the sensor and the metal, and that the foam is in place to isolate the sensor from the surrounding air. Despite this precaution, the sensor may read a very slightly lower temperature than a sensor that is in direct contact with water, and may underestimate the water temperature in some cases.
